A vehicle fresh from the dealership has already gone through factory production, transport, and often several handling steps before delivery. The clear coat frequently carries factory flaws, transport marks or micro-scratches left by the prep wash done at the dealership.
Protecting a new vehicle within the first few weeks means working on paint that's still barely marked, instead of waiting for the first dings to pile up with daily use.
New clear coat isn't flawless
Contrary to popular belief, a new vehicle's paint isn't free of defects. Production processes, transport by truck or ship, then the wash done at the dealership before delivery, often leave marks: hazing, micro-scratches and sometimes small chips on front-facing panels.
These flaws are usually hard to notice in a parking lot, but become visible under direct light or in full sun, especially on dark colors.
What to do in the first 30 days
The first few weeks after delivery are the ideal time for a full paint inspection and a decontamination, before the vehicle picks up new contaminants through daily use. It's also the most effective window for applying a durable protection.

Choosing the right level of protection
For a new vehicle, a 3-year or 5-year ceramic coating remains the most common protection: it makes maintenance easier and guards against UV, sap and road salt. Choosing between 3 and 5 years mostly depends on intended use and how long the owner plans to keep the vehicle.
Liquid PPF Opti-Shield can be added on the most exposed panels, such as the hood, front bumper and mirrors, in 2 coats for standard protection or 4 coats for reinforced protection. It doesn't replace a rigid film against major gravel impacts, though.
Mistakes to avoid in the first year
Automatic brush car washes remain the most common cause of micro-scratches on a new vehicle, since shared brushes carry sand and grit from one car to the next. Wiping dust off with a dry cloth, without lubrication or a pre-wash, has the same effect, grinding dust straight into the clear coat.
Both habits, though common, undo the benefit of a carefully applied protection within a few weeks. Hand care remains the safest way to preserve a new vehicle's appearance.
First-year maintenance
A protected new vehicle needs simpler upkeep than an untreated one, but not none: regular hand washes, wheel rinsing and extra attention during Quebec winters remain necessary to preserve the applied protection.
