The word "polishing" actually covers two different services. Maintenance polishing aims to bring back the shine of paint that's already in good condition, without necessarily removing every defect. Full correction, on the other hand, specifically targets the removal of micro-scratches, swirl marks, and oxidation.
On vehicles over 5 years old, the paint has usually accumulated years of washing, sun exposure, and contact with road salt. Polishing restores the depth of colour and gloss that faded over time on these surfaces.
Maintenance polishing versus full correction
Maintenance polishing is for vehicles whose paint is generally in good shape but has lost some of its shine. It uses a gentle compound and aims for a quick result without removing much material.
Full correction is more demanding: it systematically treats every panel to eliminate as many visible defects as possible, often in one or two distinct passes depending on the condition of the clear coat.
Restoring depth and gloss
Over time, the clear coat surface becomes covered in thousands of tiny defects, each invisible on its own but which together scatter light instead of reflecting it cleanly. The result is paint that looks flat or hazy, even right after a wash.
Polishing evens out this surface by removing the affected layer, allowing light to reflect cleanly and restoring the sense of depth typical of new paint.
Oxidation and dark-coloured paint
Oxidation occurs when the clear coat degrades from UV exposure and air, leaving a dull surface that can even feel chalky to the touch in advanced cases. It's especially visible on black and dark-coloured paint, where the smallest surface defect catches light differently.
On these colours, a well-executed polish often makes a noticeably visible difference, compared to lighter colours where the same defects are less apparent.
Why the work is done by hand and by machine
Every vehicle has a different panel geometry: flat areas, edges, and curved surfaces don't respond the same way to a polisher. Hand work allows pressure and angle to be adjusted continuously, panel by panel.
The polisher, whether orbital or rotary depending on the situation, allows precise control over speed and heat buildup, two factors that directly affect the quality of the final result.
